BILOXI, MISS. — A man who is riding a bicycle from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., for a specific purpose, plans to soon travel through Lake City. He was in Biloxi, Miss., on Dec. 31.
Ryan Bowan left Los Angeles on Dec. 2 and plans to arrive in Washington for the inauguration of President Elect Barack Obama on Jan. 20, he said.
City Manager Scott Reynolds said the potential exists for Bowan to visit during the City Council meeting slated for 7 p.m. Monday.
Bowan said on Dec. 31 that he thinks Reynolds’ assertion may be possible, but he is checking his mileage. He is taking U.S. Highway 90 to Jacksonville before heading north. He wants any other bicyclists to join him as he goes through Lake City and Columbia County, he said.
Obama’s “message of hope and progress” inspired Bowan, he noted, “to take on this monumental task of biking across the country to further inspire the entire nation to be the change they have desperately sought after forever.”
CITY COUNCIL MEETING SUBHEAD
With or without the bicyclist, the City Council meeting slated to start at 7 p.m. on Jan. 5 includes a resolution to give two pieces of land, which have been deemed surplus property by the city, to the Greater Lake City Community Development Corp.
Lester McKellum leads the Lake City CDC.
About 6,350 square feet of land on the corner of Escambia Street and Calhoun Avenue, at 204 NE Escambia St., is to be donated to the group, and more than 8,000 square feet of land at 627 NE Washington St. is set to go to McKellum and company as well.
Both sets of property are designated for affordable housing only, and construction must begin within two years.
The Lake City Housing Committee recommended approval of this award to the CDC.
Among the other actions on the City Council’s agenda, it is being asked to:
— Approve a parade permit from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 19 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
— Annex into the city, the Village Square property on U.S. 90 West.
— Conduct the first of two readings to amend a portion of the City Code relating to flood damage prevention.
— Appoint Beautification Committee members.
— Appoint Finance, Audit and Budget Committee members.
— Discuss a request from the County Commission to appoint two City Council members to be on a committee to locate property suitable for construction of the Community Mercy Center.
