Suwannee's Will Wainwright wins discus at Bob Hayes Invitational

In the school’s first home meet in over two decades, Columbia put together an impressive showing at the inaugural Tiger Open on Saturday.

The CHS girls won 10 of 14 events, starting with the very first event that saw Kensi Shaw, Mariah Newman-Ross, Melanie Gordon and Abigail Candler win the 4x800 meter relay in a time of 11:10.89. The girls swept all relay events, with Omari Foster, Jaliyah Montgomery, J'Liyn Smith and Shaw winning the 4x100 (49.05), while Alli Jenkins, Foster, Candler and Smith closed out the meet with a victory in the 4x400 (4:20.94).

Ivyana Smith also won the 200m in a time of 28.48 seconds, and she also placed third in the 100m (13.77). Zoe Bulock finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 28.86 seconds. 

Smith once again won the 400m run with a time of 1:01.35, while first-time runner Jaleyah Williams finished fifth in 1:10.40. Candler added a third-place finish in the 800m (2:38.25), Amarionna Perry was third in the 100m hurdles (20.90) and Montgomery was fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:18.60).

In the field events, Jenkins won both the long jump (4.83m) and triple jump (10.19m), while Smith was second in the long jump (4.68). In the throwing events, Kyndall Norris won the shotput (9.31m) and the javelin throw (27.82m), Hannah Williams was won the discus throw (24.56m), and Norris was third (22.49). Williams was third in the javelin as well with a throw of 20.07m.

The boys’ day was highlighted by victories from Omarion Udell in the 110m hurdles (16.02), Jeffrey Deal in the javelin throw (37.19m), and Nick Wilkerson, Brandyn Pope, Jacob McLeod and LaWarren Newton in the 4x800 relay (9:03.76).

Other notable finishes for the boys in the field events were Udell placing second (36.14m), Cameron Lumpkin placing (33.74m) and Carson Lumpkin placing fifth (30.48m) in the javelin; Deal placing second (33.68m) and Udell placing fourth (32.28m) in the discus; Deal finishing third in the shot put (12.45m); Kaden McKire placing second (6.32m) and Jaidon Miller placing third (6.19m) in the long jump; and McKire placing second in the triple jump (12.96m). 

In the boys running events, Newton was second in the 400m (53.04) while McKire was close behind in fourth at 53.56. In the 1600m, Brandyn Pope finished second (5:16.46) and John Ringenberg placed fourth (5:18.31), while Ringenberg also came in fifth in the 3200m (12:13.96). The only other relay the boys competed in was the 4x100, where D’mari Bruce, Marlin Haywood, Jaidon Miller, and Jasper White placed third in a time of 43.48.

SUWANNEE AT BOB HAYES INVITATIONAL

Both Suwannee girls and boys teams had some impressive results at the 60th Bob Hayes Invitational on Saturday.

Will Wainwright won the discus (50.87m) and was runner-up in the javelin (59.79m), accounting for all 18 points that were scored by the boys team at one of the most elite track meets in the entire state. He was also the overall male MVP winner.

Some other accomplishments to note were the girls 4x800 team placing 10th overall with a 10:51, Morgan Mobley running a season-best 2:02 to place 17th in the boys 800m while also receiving the Bob Hayes scholarship, and Ryleigh Hermanson finishing fourth in the girls 1600m with a personal-record time of 5:31.31.
